There are football shirts that tell the story of a season. And then there are shirts that become part of football history.

The AC Milan 2002/03 Away Jersey is one of them.

Predominantly white with a distinctive red V-neck, red and black adidas detailing and the legendary Opel sponsor, this shirt represents one of the greatest European campaigns in AC Milan history. It was worn during the season in which Carlo Ancelotti's Rossoneri returned to the summit of European football and claimed their sixth Champions League title.

The Story Behind the Shirt

The 2002/03 season was the beginning of the Carlo Ancelotti era at Milan.

The squad was extraordinary: Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf, Rui Costa, Rivaldo, Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi. It was a team that combined Italian defensive tradition with an extraordinary amount of technical quality.

In Europe, Milan's journey became increasingly dramatic.

After surviving the group stages, the Rossoneri defeated Ajax in a thrilling quarter-final before meeting Inter in the semi-finals. It was the first time two Milanese clubs had faced each other in the Champions League at that stage.

The first leg finished 0–0.

In the return at San Siro, Shevchenko put Milan ahead. Inter equalized late through Obafemi Martins, but the aggregate score remained 1–1 — sending Milan through on the away-goals rule.

Then came Old Trafford.

On 28 May 2003, AC Milan faced Juventus in the first all-Italian European Cup final. After 120 minutes, neither side had scored.

The European champion would be decided by penalties.

Serginho stepped up.

Nesta followed.

Then Shevchenko.

All three scored for Milan, while goalkeeper Dida produced two crucial saves. Shevchenko then converted the decisive penalty to give Milan a 3–2 shootout victory and their sixth European Cup.

The shirt in the photograph is even more special because it features the commemorative Champions League Final details for Old Trafford, 28 May 2003 — directly connecting it to that historic night.

The design itself is quintessential early-2000s adidas: a clean white body, red V-neck, black-and-red shoulder stripes and subtle red side-panel detailing. The Opel logo dominates the center, while the AC Milan crest sits above the heart with the club's European star.

But this isn't simply a white Milan away shirt.

It is a reminder of Old Trafford, penalties, Shevchenko's final kick, Maldini lifting the trophy — and Milan becoming European champions once again.
