Some football shirts become iconic because of their design. Others become legendary because of the season they represent.
The AC Milan 2002/03 Home Jersey is one of those shirts.
With its unmistakable Rossoneri red and black stripes, black V-neck, red adidas detailing and the classic Opel sponsor, this shirt represents one of the most important seasons in AC Milan's modern history. It was the beginning of the Carlo Ancelotti era in Europe — and the season that brought the European Cup back to Milan after a nine-year wait.
The Story Behind the Shirt
The 2002/03 season marked the arrival of a new chapter for Milan.
Carlo Ancelotti took charge of a squad filled with extraordinary talent: Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Cafu, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso, Rui Costa, Filippo Inzaghi, Andriy Shevchenko and Rivaldo.
The Champions League campaign began with a preliminary-round victory over Slovan Liberec before Milan navigated two group stages and entered the knockout rounds. From there, the story became legendary.
In the quarter-finals, Milan faced Ajax.
The tie appeared to be heading toward extra time in the second leg at San Siro, but in the final moments, Filippo Inzaghi and Andriy Shevchenko combined before Jon Dahl Tomasson scored the decisive goal. Milan advanced 3–2 on aggregate.
Then came the Derby della Madonnina.
For the first time in European Cup history, Milan and Inter met in the Champions League semi-finals. Two tense matches followed. Milan advanced on away goals after a 0–0 first leg and a 1–1 draw in the return, sending the Rossoneri to Manchester.
And on 28 May 2003, the stage was set at Old Trafford.
The final against Juventus finished 0–0 after 120 minutes. It became a battle between two Italian giants, with defenses dominating and Milan goalkeeper Dida making crucial saves.
Then came the penalties.
Serginho, Nesta and Shevchenko scored for Milan. Dida saved two Juventus attempts, and Shevchenko stepped forward to take the decisive kick.
He scored.
AC Milan won the shootout 3–2 and lifted their sixth European Cup.
For Paolo Maldini, the victory carried an extraordinary family connection. Exactly 40 years after his father Cesare Maldini had lifted the European Cup for Milan at Wembley, Paolo became the captain who lifted it at Old Trafford.
The shirt itself perfectly captures that era. The classic red-and-black stripes dominate the body, while the black shoulders and sleeves are finished with red adidas stripes. The Opel logo sits proudly in the center, while the traditional AC Milan crest carries the club's star above it.
It is a shirt associated with a team that combined elegance, defensive strength and European experience.
A shirt worn by Maldini, Nesta, Pirlo, Gattuso, Seedorf, Inzaghi and Shevchenko.
A shirt from the night Milan became European champions again.
