Some football shirts represent a season. Others represent redemption.

The AC Milan 2006/07 Home Jersey is one of the most iconic shirts of the 2000s — the adidas Teamgeist design with its bold red-and-black stripes, black sleeves, gold detailing and the unmistakable bwin sponsor.

But what makes this shirt special isn't simply the design.

It is the shirt of Athens 2007.

The Story Behind the Shirt

The 2006/07 season began in difficult circumstances for Milan. The club entered the Champions League through qualifying after the Calciopoli scandal, while an eight-point deduction made the domestic campaign even more challenging.

Yet in Europe, something extraordinary was happening.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, Milan's experienced core of Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso and Clarence Seedorf was joined by the brilliance of Kaká and the finishing instincts of Filippo Inzaghi.

Kaká became the competition's top scorer with 10 goals, carrying Milan through some of the most difficult moments of the campaign.

Milan eliminated Celtic, Bayern Munich and then Manchester United on the way to Athens.

The semi-final against Manchester United became legendary.

After losing 3–2 at Old Trafford, Milan returned to San Siro and produced what the club itself describes as its "perfect game."

Milan 3–0 Manchester United.

The Rossoneri were going back to the Champions League final.

Athens — May 23, 2007

Waiting for them was Liverpool.

Two years earlier, Liverpool had come back from 3–0 down against Milan in Istanbul and won the Champions League on penalties.

Now, the two teams met again.

This time, Milan would have their moment.

The final remained tense until just before half-time, when Andrea Pirlo's free-kick deflected off Filippo Inzaghi and into the Liverpool goal.

Milan 1–0.

With eight minutes remaining, Kaká found Inzaghi again.

The striker rounded Pepe Reina and finished.

2–0.

Liverpool pulled one back through Dirk Kuyt in the 89th minute, but Milan held on.

The final whistle confirmed it:

AC Milan were European champions for the seventh time.

For Inzaghi, it was especially poetic. He had been forced to watch the 2005 final from the sidelines. Two years later, he scored both Milan goals in the final.

For Paolo Maldini, it was another extraordinary chapter in a career that seemed almost impossible to match.

And for Milan, Athens erased some of the pain of Istanbul.

This shirt became the symbol of that redemption.

The design itself is pure mid-2000s adidas: the Teamgeist template, traditional Rossoneri stripes, black shoulders and sleeves, red adidas stripes, subtle gold trim and the bwin sponsor across the chest.

It is the shirt of Kaká's brilliance, Inzaghi's finishing, Maldini's leadership and Ancelotti's greatest European triumph as Milan coach.

Most importantly, it is the shirt of Milan's seventh European Cup.
