Some shirts represent a team. Others represent the beginning of an era.

The FC Barcelona 2008/09 Home Jersey is one of the most important shirts in modern football history — the shirt worn during Pep Guardiola’s first season, when Barcelona transformed their football and became the first Spanish club to complete the historic treble.

The Story Behind the Jersey

The 2008/09 season began a new chapter at Camp Nou.

After taking over the first team, Pep Guardiola immediately placed his faith in a young, technically gifted squad built around Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué and Samuel Eto’o.

What followed was extraordinary.

Barcelona won the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey, and reached the Champions League final in Rome. The team played a style of football built around possession, movement and relentless attacking — a philosophy that would define one of the greatest sides of the modern era. UEFA described Guardiola's first season as a campaign that ended with Barcelona completing the first treble ever achieved by a Spanish club.

The Champions League journey included one of the most dramatic semi-finals in European history.

Against Chelsea, Barcelona appeared to be heading out after Michael Essien's goal in London. Then, deep into stoppage time, Andrés Iniesta struck a magnificent equalizer in the 93rd minute, sending Barça through to the final on away goals.

Then came Rome.

On 27 May 2009, Barcelona faced the defending champions, Manchester United, at the Stadio Olimpico. It was a meeting between two extraordinary teams — and a symbolic passing of the torch.

United started aggressively, but Barcelona struck first. In the 10th minute, Samuel Eto'o received the ball from Iniesta, cut inside Nemanja Vidić and finished past Edwin van der Sar.

Then came the moment that would become one of the defining images of the era.

In the 70th minute, Xavi Hernández delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the area. Despite being one of the smallest players on the pitch, Lionel Messi rose above the defense and headed the ball beyond Van der Sar.

Barcelona 2–0 Manchester United.

The third European Cup in club history was theirs. Messi finished the competition as its top scorer with nine goals.

And with that victory, Barcelona completed the treble — La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League — becoming the first Spanish club to accomplish it.

A Shirt That Belongs to Rome

The shirt pictured here is particularly special.

Instead of simply carrying the standard 2008/09 design, it features the commemorative “FINAL ROMA 2009 – 27 MAY – STADIO OLIMPICO” detail, making it directly connected to the night Barcelona conquered Europe.

The design itself is unmistakable: the traditional Barça colors are split vertically between deep blue and garnet, creating a striking interpretation of the club's identity. The famous Nike Swoosh and UNICEF logo appear in yellow, while the Barcelona crest sits proudly over the heart.

The UNICEF partnership is also an important part of the story. Rather than a conventional commercial sponsor dominating the front of the shirt, Barcelona wore the UNICEF name and emblem — a partnership that became closely associated with the identity of the club during this era.

And behind the design is something even more significant:

This was the shirt of the beginning of the Guardiola era.

The shirt of Messi's rise to becoming the world's best player.
The shirt of Xavi and Iniesta controlling the biggest matches in Europe.
The shirt of Iniesta in London.
The shirt of Messi's header in Rome.
The shirt of Barcelona's first historic treble.
