Some football shirts are remembered for a great team. Others become symbols of an entire era. The FC Bayern Munich 2000/01 Home Jersey is one of those shirts.

Red, white and unmistakably Bayern, with the iconic Opel sponsor across the chest, this adidas design was worn during one of the most dramatic seasons in the club's history. It was the shirt of a Bayern side built around Oliver Kahn, Stefan Effenberg, Giovane Élber, Bixente Lizarazu, Samuel Kuffour and Patrik Andersson — a team determined to turn years of European heartbreak into redemption.

The Story Behind the Shirt

The 2000/01 season began with Bayern carrying the memory of the 1999 Champions League final, when Manchester United had taken the trophy away from them in the final moments.

Two years later, the same core of players had another opportunity.

Under Ottmar Hitzfeld, Bayern progressed through a demanding Champions League campaign, eventually eliminating Manchester United in the quarter-finals and Real Madrid in the semi-finals. They defeated Madrid in both legs — 1–0 at the Bernabéu and 2–1 in Munich — setting up a final against Valencia at the San Siro in Milan.

The final on 23 May 2001 became one of the most famous penalty shootouts in Champions League history.

Valencia took the lead through Gaizka Mendieta from the penalty spot. Bayern responded through captain Stefan Effenberg, also from a penalty. After 120 minutes, the score remained 1–1.

Then came the shootout.

Oliver Kahn became the hero.

The Bayern goalkeeper saved three penalties, including the decisive attempt from Mauricio Pellegrino. When Thomas Linke converted Bayern's fifth penalty, the trophy was finally heading back to Munich. Bayern had won the European Cup for the fourth time, and for the first time in 25 years.

But the Champions League wasn't the only story.

Just four days earlier, Bayern had secured the Bundesliga title in extraordinary circumstances. On the final day against Hamburger SV, Patrik Andersson scored from a free kick in the 94th minute to snatch the championship. Bayern completed a historic Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League treble.

And that makes this shirt particularly special.

The design is pure turn-of-the-century adidas: a bold Bayern red body, white crew neck, white adidas shoulder stripes and the classic FC Bayern München crest. Across the center sits the unmistakable Opel logo — one of the sponsors most strongly associated with Bayern's football of this era.

It is more than a retro Bayern shirt.

It is the shirt of redemption.

The shirt worn by a generation that finally turned the heartbreak of Barcelona 1999 into European glory in Milan 2001.
