Some football shirts become legendary because of the players who wore them. Others become legendary because of a single night.
The Liverpool FC 2004/05 Home Jersey belongs to the second category.
This iconic red Reebok shirt, featuring the famous Carlsberg sponsor and special European details, is forever connected to Istanbul 2005 — the night Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in football history and reclaimed the European Cup after 21 years.
The Story Behind the Shirt
Liverpool entered the 2004/05 season under new manager Rafael Benítez, beginning a new chapter after years of waiting to return to the very top of European football.
The team was built around a group of players who would become Liverpool legends: Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Luis García, Milan Baroš, John Arne Riise and goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.
But their Champions League journey was anything but straightforward.
Liverpool survived the group stage and then faced Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus and Chelsea in the knockout rounds.
The semi-final against Chelsea was especially dramatic. After a 0–0 draw at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool won 1–0 at Anfield through Luis García, sending the Reds to their first European Cup final since 1985.
Then came Istanbul.
May 25, 2005
At the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Liverpool faced AC Milan.
The night could hardly have started worse.
Paolo Maldini scored after just 51 seconds. Hernán Crespo then scored twice before half-time.
Liverpool were 3–0 down.
For many teams, the final would have been over.
But six minutes changed football history.
Steven Gerrard pulled one back in the 54th minute.
Two minutes later, Vladimir Šmicer made it 3–2.
Then Gerrard was brought down inside the penalty area. Xabi Alonso's initial penalty was saved by Dida, but Alonso followed up and scored.
3–3.
Liverpool had come back from three goals down in six extraordinary minutes.
After 90 minutes, and then extra time, the score remained level.
The European Cup would be decided by penalties.
Liverpool scored through Hamann, Cissé and Šmicer. Jerzy Dudek saved from Andrea Pirlo and then produced the defining moment of the night, stopping Andriy Shevchenko's decisive penalty.
Liverpool were European champions for the fifth time.
The Miracle of Istanbul was complete.
The shirt pictured captures that exact era. The red Reebok design with the classic Carlsberg sponsor became inseparable from the 2005 Champions League campaign, while the European details on the chest commemorate Liverpool's return to the top of European football. Liverpool's own retro collection describes the 2005 shirt as the design worn on the night of the Istanbul final by legends including Gerrard, Carragher and Xabi Alonso.
This isn't simply a Liverpool shirt from 2005.
It is the shirt of Gerrard's header.
Šmicer's strike.
Alonso's rebound.
Dudek's double save.
And one of the greatest comebacks the European Cup has ever seen.
