Few football shirts are tied to a single image as strongly as the Real Madrid 2001/02 Home Jersey.
A pure white adidas design with dark blue details, a classic polo collar and the Realmadrid.com sponsor across the chest, this was the shirt of Real Madrid's centenary season — and the shirt worn when Zinedine Zidane produced one of the most unforgettable goals in Champions League history.
It was the beginning of a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Zidane, Luís Figo, Raúl, Roberto Carlos, Fernando Morientes and Iker Casillas forming the core of a team that would once again conquer Europe.
The Story Behind the Shirt
The 2001/02 season was unlike any other in Real Madrid's history.
On 6 March 2002, the club celebrated its 100th anniversary. The centenary transformed the entire season into a celebration of Real Madrid's extraordinary history — but the greatest celebration was still to come.
After winning the Champions League in 2000, Real Madrid had returned to the final two years later.
The road to Glasgow was filled with familiar rivals. Madrid eliminated Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals before overcoming Barcelona in the semi-finals. Zidane and Raúl both scored spectacular goals in the Barcelona tie, setting the stage for a final against Bayer Leverkusen.
Then came 15 May 2002.
At Hampden Park in Glasgow, Raúl opened the scoring early. Lucio equalized for Leverkusen, but just before half-time, Roberto Carlos sent a high ball toward the edge of the penalty area.
Zinedine Zidane was waiting.
With his left foot, Zidane struck a magnificent volley that flew into the top corner.
Real Madrid 2–1 Bayer Leverkusen.
That goal became the defining image of the final — and ultimately delivered La Novena, Real Madrid's ninth European Cup.
The final minutes created another legendary moment. Goalkeeper César was forced off through injury, and a young Iker Casillas came on to protect the lead. His saves helped Madrid survive the final moments and lift the trophy in Glasgow.
The shirt itself perfectly represents the era. The traditional white Real Madrid base is paired with dark blue adidas stripes, a white polo collar and the simple Realmadrid.com sponsor. The Champions League version featured the blue adidas stripes prominently on the sleeves.
And perhaps most importantly, this is the shirt of La Novena.
The shirt of Zidane's volley.
The shirt of Real Madrid's centenary.
The shirt of a European champion.
