The Real Madrid 2016/17 home jersey is the shirt of La Duodécima — the season when Real Madrid became the first club to win the Champions League in consecutive seasons under the modern format. It was also the shirt of a remarkable domestic campaign, as Zinedine Zidane's side returned to the top of Spain and created one of the most successful seasons in the club's history.

The Story Behind the Jersey

After winning La Undécima in Milan the previous season, Zinedine Zidane had transformed Real Madrid into a team capable of combining experience, depth and extraordinary individual talent. Cristiano Ronaldo remained the attacking reference, while Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Karim Benzema and a deep supporting cast formed the core of one of Europe's dominant sides.

The 2016/17 Champions League campaign began with a dramatic group stage, including matches against Sporting CP, Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw. Madrid then eliminated Napoli, Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid to reach another European final.

On 3 June 2017, Real Madrid faced Juventus in Cardiff. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring before Mario Mandžukić produced a spectacular equaliser. But the second half belonged to Madrid. Casemiro restored the lead with a deflected strike, Ronaldo scored again, and Marco Asensio completed a 4–1 victory. Real Madrid had won La Duodécima, becoming the first team to successfully defend the Champions League title in the modern era.

But the story of this shirt goes beyond Europe.

On 21 May 2017, just two weeks before the Cardiff final, Real Madrid had secured their 33rd La Liga title on the final day with a 2–0 victory over Málaga. Cristiano Ronaldo scored inside the opening two minutes and Karim Benzema added the second. Madrid finished with 93 points, three ahead of Barcelona, scoring 106 goals across the campaign and finding the net in every league match.

That combination of La Liga and Champions League success made 2016/17 one of the defining seasons of Zidane's early managerial career. Real Madrid eventually collected five trophies during 2017, including La Liga, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

The jersey itself brought a subtle retro feeling to the famous white of Real Madrid. The club describes the design as a combination of the traditional white base with purple adidas stripes, inspired by the style of Real Madrid shirts from the 1980s, while also bringing back the classic collar.

It is a shirt connected to the beginning of an extraordinary European run — the first of three consecutive Champions League titles for Zidane's Real Madrid.
